I posit that Outler rightly understood Wesley to mean that experience with God that assures one of their personal salvation. He also concluded that without the guidance of God, Reason is mere useless speculation. However, verses are parts of paragraphs and must be taken together or else the meaning of verses can be misinterpreted. So, tradition became in his view the second aspect of the so-called Quadrilateral. Therefore, I believe experience is a powerful tool one can utilize in the endeavor of understanding Christian truth, just as long as it is used as a means of attempting to vivify the truth of Scripture along with the discernment quadrilatreal reason.

My main motivation in this post was to try increase awareness within the UMC and other parts of the Church that lift up the quadrilateral as a helpful tool for theological reflection that the way that we are currently using the quadrilateral is in many ways profoundly different from and perhaps even contrary to the intended use of its creator. I have no disagreement with you over the rampant misuse of the quadrilateral, and would echo your assessment that it is frequently used to rationalize what one already believes.

Perhaps the reason their church is exploding and ours is shrinking is due to the fact that we are cessationists who cling to 18th century conceptions of human nature. If we choose the latter, we ought to at least be honest that we are now using a method of theological reflection that neither John Wesley nor Albert Outler would quadilateral endorsed.
This is quadrliateral the One who sustains and inspires us in times of confusion and doubt. The quadrilateral is not doctrine, it is a proposed method for theological reflection. That seems to be a terrible strategy.
It means that through the Scripture, God speaks continually and gives inspiration to the reader of the Quadrilaetral. The past is not your bully pulpit – Unsettled Christianity. Without reason, we cannot understand the essential truths of Scripture. As an astute observer of human behavior, and a pragmatist, Wesley’s approach to the Quadrilateral was most certainly phenomenologicaldescribing in a practical way how things actually work in actual human experience. My concern, and the reason I wrote them out, was that it seemed that many on the left and some on the right were going at it in the entirely opposite direction with my and their incorrect understanding of experience putting scripture off until last, if it was quadrilaterxl worth considering.
